a deeper treasure

30 middle school kids dive into the pool in a mad frenzy.  They are grabbing as many coins as they can before they all disappear. Earlier I tossed a ton of coins into the pool before their very eyes, and now they are after it with every ounce of energy they have (something of which middle school kids have in abundance).  Some of them go for the big coins in the deep end.  Lungs threaten to burst and eyes burn from chlorine, but still they continue their mad search.  Moments later every tiny treasure has been scooped up, and now they sit on the edge of the pool proudly revealing what they found.

“So what are you really after?  What is your greatest treasure?  How bad do you want to be close to God?  How intensely do you seek after Him?  With the same intensity as you went after these coins in your hands?”

We finish our last Lunch Club of the summer with these questions in mind.  It’s been a great summer, and I am proud of these kids.  They have worked hard on Wednesdays, doing service projects all over our community.  And they have had fun doing it.

In the midst of all the work and fun with friends have they found something special?  Have they discovered the joy of serving?  Have they felt Jesus present with them as they hammered nails and packaged food and made sandwiches?  Have they found a treasure in their relationship with Abba Father?  Will they continue to search in a deeper way for God?  That’s my hope for them...

as it is for me too.
