a hundred times a day

Last night at our high school ministry event Randy talked about St. Patrick.  This guy prayed 100 times a day.  That’s incredible!  I wonder how many times a day I pray?  I’m sure it’s a lot less than 100.  Today I am going to find out.  I had my wake up with God. I did the breathing prayer on the way to basketball, and then again on the way back home.  I prayed in the shower, and then with Candi before leaving for work.  I prayed again in the car on the way to work.  Then in my office, asking God to help me find my keys which I misplaced sometime yesterday.  So, its 9:15 and I have prayed 7 times.  I think I’ll fall way short of 100.  I know it’s easy to have set times of prayer, but then get into work and have a huge chunk of the day go by and not connect with God at all.  Maybe the act of counting will make me more aware and encourage more prayer.  We’ll see.  Okay, I’m up to 8 now, because I just prayed while typing this that the experiment will be something much more than adding up numbers, but that it will actually draw me closer to God.

Candi just called.  She found my keys!  Thank you Lord!!!

Oh, that makes 9 prayers.

3:20pm…   I’ve only added 6 prayerful moments so far.  Good moments, but not very many compared to Ol' Saint Patrick.  I’m thinking he would have been far beyond 15 by 3:20pm.  Still, it's been cool to be mindful of it today.

Really cool post! I feel like that is my life, where a huge chunk of my day goes by without acknowledging God. I get up and have a great time with God in the morning, am prayerful during the bus ride to work, pray before I walk into my kindergarten class... walk out of school at 5:45 and realize I haven't had a moment with God since the morning. I try to be more aware the next day, but the same thing happens again. I hate that. I want to be more aware of you, God.

Okay Sara, lets try something. I just read something by Frank Laubach last night, somebody who really learned to practice God's presence in his life. He tried praying a prayer something like this all day long, "Lord, how can I meet someone's need in this moment?" Think about all the activities that would instantly involve God instead of isolate God if you pray that prayer over and over. This could help you as you teach during the day. Every moment you spend instructing a child, you are asking God to meet their need through you. Every lesson you plan is done prayerfully, with the goal of a child's need. Every interation with other staff at the school is done prayerfully, looking for an opportunity to serve. I want to try this to see if it helps me continue to be aware of God's influence during that difficult chunk of the day when I am in my office.

I started this already this morning, and it changed how I interacted with guys before and after playing basketball. Then when I got home, before Brian left for school, instead of jumping in the shower right away, I did some stuff for Brian and Mom, just because that prayer was on my mind. Through all that I have stayed connected and aware of God's presence with me.

What do you think?
