We all gather around Ryan’s new 48” tv, pumped for 24. Naomi brought strawberry shortcake, and Matt some pizza. The anticipation in the room is electric. We’ve waited a week to hear the familiar beep, beep, beep, as the digital 24 clock begins to click. My request for my friends to join me in my journey tonight is in complete opposition to the attitude in the room. “You want us to sit in silence during commercials?” “That’s crazy” Adam is the first to say, “I’m in”, then the others agree. So we go from the adrenaline rush of this intense car chase right into 3 minutes of silence and darkness, (well, actually Ryan mutes the tv, and pushes play on his thunder storm rain sound track, a nice touch). I must admit, after that car chase, it’s hard to shift gears down to neutral and just… breathe. My heart is pumping, and my mind wants to return to Jack and his mission to stop terrorists. I am not able to get complete focus on God during that first 3 minute commercial. But we continue the experiment through 3 more commercials, and I eventually am able to totally focus, and forget about Jack and his adventures. If I can do the breathing prayer during commercials of 24, I think I can add it into any sliver of opportunity I might discover on any given day.
