breakfast at bert's

I’m up extra early this morning, i connect quickly with God, throw on some clothes, and then I’m off for an early morning breakfast at Bert’s with Brian (my son) and some friends.  Bert’s is by far the best breakfast place around.  I am the last to leave.  Just as planned, they all drive away in cars, but I walk home, giving me another chance to experiment with the breathing prayer.  You would think that your surroundings would fade as you focus on breathing, but actually just the opposite happens.  I become more present and aware of my world.  Connecting with God opens my eyes to His creation all around me.  First I notice the perfect blue sky, and the warmth of the sun in contrast to the bitter cold air.  For the first time in months I actually notice birds chirping.  The crunch of my shoes on the icy sidewalk, a neighbor’s car starting; no noise is unnoticed, no sight unseen.  Yet they do not distract me from my focus on God; no, they only amplify it.  Joy seeps into my spirit.

Chris, I don't know if you are familiar with the works of Richard Foster, but I'm going to send you a couple of his works, "Celebration of Discipline" and "Prayer & Worship: A Spiritual Formation Guide". I'm also trying to find a copy of a little booklet called "Meditative Prayer" that I absolutely love, and think you will love too. I've done meditative prayer exercises with my youth group on retreats in the past and its an incredible experience. There is MUCH focus on breathing. Also check out Rob Bell's Nooma #14 video "Breathe".

Jim, I have Celebration of Discipline (great book), and would love to borrow Prayer & Worship. Would love to see the "MEditative Prayer" book too.

I was just thinking this morning about asking if anyone has ideas for morning prayers... some short but sweet prayers to add some variety to my wake up with God. ANy ideas? So cool that you mentioned the Rob Bell "Breathe" NOOMA, because another friend also mentioned it to me, so I saw it and was very inspired by it. See my post called, "from the gut" :)
