long year of longing

Dinner time around the table was always important for our family of five. A time to connect with each other, to share about the day, and to have a few laughs. As the kids grew up and got busy, we still tried hard to make it happen. But when Sara went off to college we sadly took the center leaf out of the table. My walk down the hall holding that table leaf was not unlike a funeral procession.

But I soon discovered that the saddness of storing it away means that sometime in the future I'll have the joy of pulling it out again.

Today Brian and I put the table leaf back in! Why? Because Scotty will join us tomorrow, and then we head to Chicago to pick up Sara and Jonah from the airport! Tomorrow ends a long year of longing.

And our table leaf will remain in place for two whole weeks!
