Brian sits at the breakfast table while his mom works in the kitchen. He’s got the last of his first piece of toast in his mouth. As Candi brings him more toast he catches her eye and points at his empty glass…
Mom: “Say it.”
Brian: “Orange juice.”
Mom: “Say the whole sentence.”
Brian: “Would you please get me some more orange juice?”
Slightly disgusted, she grabs the empty glass and heads for the fridge.
Mom: “You know, I’m not your maid.”
Brian: “Just keep telling yourself that.”
Later on, when I finally stop laughing, I give some thought to this interchange.
Do we treat God this way?
How can I get what I want from God with the least amount of effort? Is my mouth too full to speak a full sentence? Do I just point to my empty glass, expecting God to fill it? What is my ultimate purpose in prayer time, to see what I can get from God, or to just be with Him?
I am not your maid.
