It’s Mother’s Day! My first morning task is to cut fresh lilacs for Candi. The sweet scent fills the whole upstairs; she’ll smell them before she sees them for sure. Next I make an attempt at cutting grapefruit wedges. I fail at this miserably, but the thought will count.
She has half her kids home to celebrate together. Not perfect, but still very nice to have Scotty home. Her reunion with Jonah and Sara will have to wait one more week. After a nice time at church we go out for dinner. I present a card that I made myself. I like to make my own cards for her. It's more personal, plus I save five bucks. Nice.
Candi gets an afternoon nap while the lawn gets mowed. Brian usually handles this job for us, but Grandpa offered him cash to do his lawn. So guess whose mowing our lawn now?
The sound of the engine drowns out all distractions and makes it easy to focus on nothing but mowing. The smell of cut grass is strong. It rained slightly an hour ago, so the lawn mower wheels leave a clear damp impression for me to follow on every trip back and forth. While concentrating on keeping straight lines I think of the scripture about the unfit farmer who looks back as he plows his field. Recalling a scripture awakens me to God's presence. I am reminded that the front lawn is now done and no invitation was ever offered to have Jesus walk along with me. I entered into a mindless mechanical mowing motion, and missed my chance to be in His presence.
That will change for the backyard.
