our golden ones

On our backpacking trip we all took time to listen, and we heard God’s voice.  The Lord gave us specific words to share.  I wonder if we will continue to listen, and hear Him, the way we did in the mountains.  So yesterday I was driving along listening to a teaching on this issue.  The guy on the tape said that when you wake up to certain song lyrics on your mind that it could often be God’s way of speaking to you.

So this morning I wake up with very clear lyrics in my mind, like I know right away this feels like it might be God speaking.  I’m a bit leery, and do not want to over spiritualize everything, but on the other hand I want to hear God’s voice any way He chooses to speak to me.  It’s from a James Taylor song…

Let other hearts be broken.

Let other dreams run dry.

Our golden ones sail on and on,

To another land beneath another sky.

So, is this really from You, God?  If so, what does it mean?  And who is it for?  Should Candi and I be thinking about mission work somewhere far away?  Could it be about Jonah and Sara, since they have been living over seas?

I sense God is sort of snickering, like He’s waiting for me to get the punch line of a joke.  I jump in the shower and as the water hits my face the meaning of these words hit me as well.  Our golden ones… today, this very day, we are celebrating my mom and dads 50th anniversary; their golden anniversary.  My mom and dad are the golden ones!

Their hearts have surely been broken in the past; they have lost two of their children in tragic accidents.  Broken, yes, but not destroyed.  And their dreams are becoming reality.  And God is not finished with them; He wants to do new things and take them to a new place in their life together.

As I sit on a picnic bench sharing these lyrics with mom and dad, I read something wonderful in their faces.  They confirm that this is from God, and it’s just what they needed to hear.  What a gift of joy!

God, thanks for speaking to me in unusual ways!  May those ways become less unusual.
