Stephen Ministry is an international volunteer ministry equipping individuals to provide one-on-one Christian care to hurting people in and around the First Church community. A Stephen minister provides confidential care, support and encouragement for emotional and spiritual needs to adults experiencing an immediate crisis. Some life situations that a Stephen Minister might help with include:
- hospitalization
- illness
- death of a loved one
- unemployment
- loneliness
- spiritual crisis
- separation or divorce
- aging or caring for an elderly loved one
- moving in or out of the community
- childbirth / adoption
- stress, anxiety or the blues
First Church Stephen Ministers and Leaders care for more than 25 persons at any given time, in an agreement to meet on a regular basis for a period of time developing a care relationship. While not professional counselors nor therapists, Stephen Ministers and Leaders:
- are committed followers of Christ
- have participated in 45 hours of training
- truly care about people
- possess the spiritual gifts of mercy
- accept people as they are
- respect confidentiality
- listen and encourage
