Something mystical occurs when a group of people decide to shed their skin and be real. Honest challenges are confessed, heavy burdens are hauled out and displayed for all to see, deep hurts that beg for healing. I haven’t seen so many tears in a long time (or laughed as much for that matter). I love these friends dearly; they are people I only see a couple times a year, yet quickly become like family when we are together.
What makes this magic happen? The nearness of Disney World? I don't think so. Could it be our commitment to authenticity? Or maybe our common passionate purpose? Or simply the unity that comes to those who walk in the Spirit together? Maybe a mixture of all these things usher us into the Magic Kingdom.
I am reminded again that intimacy with Christ is discovered in community. My journey toward deeper intimacy with God must include more than a vertical move toward God, but also this horizontal movement into deeper community with my close friends back home.
Father, may my experiences with friends take us all to deeper places with You.
