Thirsty?

This is Ella Grace, she is the daughter of one of my very best friends.  They came to visit us over the summer, and I snapped this picture at the beach!  Ella calls me Mimi and my husband, Uncle David.  She has been a precious gift in our lives.  Today Ella's Mom, Kristan, called to tell me what Ella said today.  She said Ella called her into her room and said, "Mom, I'm thirsty.  Could you get me some coffee?"  Ella will be four this summer, so as you can imagine her mommy said, "Ella, little girls really don't drink coffee."  To which Ella responded with: "Well, I know three little girls that do".  Ella then proceeded to tell her Mom that herself and her two grandmothers were the three "little girls" she was talking about.  You see, when she goes for coffee with her grandmothers they allow her to have sips of their coffee!  She just told on her grandmothers, and I am pretty sure they are in big trouble.  (Paula and Cheri, the two grandmothers in question, you better steer clear of Mama Kristan for a few days!)  Kristan however, decided to get Ella a drink of water instead and her thirst was quenched!

After talking to Kristan I sat down to write my blog and I got to thinking about the scripture in Psalm 42:1-2a:  "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God."  God created us with a deep longing for communion with Him.  But, we so often try to fill that hunger and thirst with other things.  So many times we find ourselves saying, "I just feel like something is missing."  Most of the time when we are feeling this way it is because we have failed to really connect with the Lord that day, or at all.  People live lonely, empty lives, no matter how rich or successful they are, without the Lord.

One of my favorite worship songs is, "Hungry" by Kathryn Scott:

Hungry I come to You
For I know You satisfy
I am empty but I know
Your love does not run dry

So I wait for You
So I wait for You

I'm falling on my knees
Offering all of me
Jesus You're all
This heart is living for

Broken I run to You
For Your arms are open wide
I am weary but I know Your touch
Restores my life

One of the most striking lines in this song is "So I wait for You".  We get so anxious to feel complete that we try very hard to fill our lives on our own instead of waiting on the Lord.  His touch is the only thing that can restore our lives, and His desire is to see us satisfied with Him and Him alone!

If you look at the Christmas story this is exactly what Mary, the mother of Jesus, exemplifies for us.  She offered everything she was, to have all He had to give!  Are you thirsty, and I don't mean for coffee?  What are you filling your life with?  Are you crying out for your thirst to be satisfied, but like little Ella are you asking for the wrong thing?  I pray today that you will allow the Lord to fill you up with His love, after all...His love never runs dry!

We love you Crystal. The girls and I miss you so much. I assured Ella that if Mimi were here she would be giving her diet dr. pepper instead of coffee. You are doing amazing things - keep up the good work - I am proud to call you my best friend.
